Welcome

I am a French-to-English literary translator who loves the French language, good literature and fine arts. I dive into exciting projects and give them my all! I came to the field late … after a wayward path in acting and teaching, but it was that path that has helped make me who I am. From teaching and studying I was able to hone my love and expertise in literature and fine arts and understand the subtleties of the texts. From my life as an actor I learned to immerse myself in a character and see literary translation as embodying my authors and grafting myself onto their world.

What makes me happier than anything is receiving bravos from the authors I translate. I’ve had the privilege of working with great authors, including the 2022 Nobel Prize for literature winner, Annie Ernaux, who writes: “I deeply appreciated Jonathan Kaplansky’s translation of my book La vie extérieure / Things Seen, a journal of things seen in streets, stores and on public transportation. He conveyed with precision and sensitivity what I wanted to show of today’s world and wanted readers to experience.”
